New legal coaching service helps people navigating their own family law matters access practical, procedural support
Navigating the family law system without full legal representation can be challenging. Court forms, filing requirements, deadlines, evidence and unfamiliar procedures can quickly become overwhelming for people managing their own matters.
Clark Woods LLP is now offering legal coaching specifically for self-represented family law litigants in British Columbia, providing practical administrative and procedural support to help clients better navigate the process.
The service is led by family law paralegal and Certified Legal Coach Paula Martins.
“For people representing themselves, even understanding what needs to happen next can be difficult,” says Martins. “Legal coaching can help clients stay organized, understand the process and prepare for the procedural steps involved in their family law matter.”
Supporting Self-Represented Family Law Litigants
Legal coaching is different from traditional legal representation. Clients remain responsible for managing their own family law matter, while their legal coach provides support with the administrative and procedural aspects of the process.
Depending on the client’s needs, coaching can include assistance with court forms and documents, filing requirements, organizing evidence, preparing court application binders, managing timelines and understanding procedural steps.
The goal is to give self-represented litigants practical support as they work their way through a process that can often feel unfamiliar and complex.
“The client remains in control of their own matter,” says Martins. “My role is to help with the procedural side of the process so they can be better organized and prepared as they move forward.”
Legal Coaching and Legal Advice
An important distinction is that paralegal legal coaching does not replace legal advice or legal representation.
The coaching service focuses on procedural and administrative support and does not include interpreting the law, developing legal strategy, negotiating on a client’s behalf or recommending which legal option a client should pursue.
When a self-represented client encounters an issue that requires legal advice or strategy, Clark Woods’ family lawyers are available for a separate consultation.
This allows clients to access different levels of support depending on what their family law matter requires.
Legal Coaching in English and Portuguese
Martins is fluent in both English and Portuguese and can provide legal coaching in either language.
For Portuguese-speaking clients in British Columbia, this provides an opportunity to receive procedural family law support in the language in which they are most comfortable communicating.
“Family law can already be difficult to navigate, and language can create another barrier,” says Martins. “Being able to provide this support in Portuguese is something that is very important to me.”
